I rounded the corner in the grocery store about a month ago and scared a fellow shopper with my gasp and a shout of glee. There on an end cap was my favorite snack cake that had been discontinued several years ago.
Oh Suzi Q how I’ve missed you.

My absolute favorite snack cake. I immediately snapped up a box and later regretted I didn’t pick up more than one…like three or four or more.
I mean Hostess may have a change of heart and discontinue them again causing all of us Suzi Q lovers much angst and alot of hoarding.
Even the box has the annoucement “The Favorite Is Back!”
So Hostess,my question is why did you ever leave me in the lurch without my favorite comfort food? How cruel.
When Paul left for his first deployment my favorite way to relax after that heinous task of grocery shopping was to treat myself to a Suzi Q and a Diet Pepsi while laying on a lounge chair in my size 6 shorts in my backyard in Hawaii.
This was back when I actually had a working metabolism and breathing did not cause weight gain.
Yes Paul went on a six month Navy deployment and left me high and dry with a 13 month old, away from family in that really awful place..Hawaii. 🙂
Despite being left in a tropical oasis I still needed comfort food and an attitude check. I remember one day when I wanted to go to the bank to get cash only to discover it was King Kamehameha Day and all the banks were closed. This was back in the dark ages before ATM’s, tap to pay, uber eats and all those other rather convenient things.
Oh and no cell phones or email so Paul and I communicated via real mail aka snail mail. I also had to walk to the store in the snow uphill…in Hawaii.
In any case after discovering all the banks were closed and I was going to actually have to cook that evening I found myself at a stop light thinking ” I can’t believe he left me in this God forsaken place”
OOPS
Only took a nano second to come to my senses and realize I was in Hawaii. The land of perpetual sun. The place people dream of going on vacation. For crying out loud I had a banana tree in my backyard and ate bananas off of it.
After that I no longer complained about where Paul left me and embraced the Aloha spirit and Suzi Q’s.
I had a great group of friends and much support which was good since Paul returned in November only to be sent out again nine months later. This time he left me barefoot and pregnant 🙂 Our second daughter, Julie, was considerate and made her appearance after Paul came home. Phew.
Suzi Q’s remained my favorite stress reliever on occasion.
As much as I am grateful to Hostess I must complain.
I so loved Suzi Q’s and actually still do BUT like I said back then I had an actual working metabolism. I could have eaten a whole box and had not a worry…not so much now. I brought the box home and just stared at it. Paul wished he had seen them first as bringing them home would have made him a shoe in for “husband of the year”
So I stared at the box and then had one. Soooo good. Oh the memories. Oh the reality. The next morning I noticed my weight was up…yes Miss Suzi Q you are at fault. Just staring at you added poundage.
So Hostess, thank you and judging from the scarcity of Suzi Q’s on the shelves there are alot of other Suzi Q afficianodos out there. Without thinking I grabbed two more boxes when I finally found them again knowing they are like twinkies and will last for years.
Yet I am weak and they won’t last years.
Also I read the ingredient list. Yikes.
Still they taste like memories of a 25 years old with awesome metabolism, a decent bod, a hubby in the Philipines, and they make me smile.
Now if Whataburger shows up in Virginia I am really in trouble.
Let’s just give a cheer to comfort food. May it always be there when we want it, need it or just want to wander down memory lane.
As Always, Keep Triing
Jennifer

Just after Paul returned on deployment 🙂
